Word-pair questions ask children to find two words that mean nearly the same, or nearly the opposite. They look simple, but they reward children who notice shades of meaning.
Close is not the same as identical
Happy and joyful are close. Happy and content are close too, but not in the same way. The best answer is the pair with the nearest meaning, so children need to compare, not just spot a link.
The right answer is the closest match, not the first link your child spots.
- Read every option before choosing.
- Say each pair in the same sentence to test it.
- Watch for words with more than one meaning, such as fair or light.
Try it with your child
Play a quick game at dinner: one person says a word, the next gives a synonym, the next an antonym. Keep going until someone is stuck.
