Who we are
Learning Treat ("we", "us") provides online 11+ courses and study materials for families, from Langley, Slough, in the United Kingdom. This policy explains what personal information we collect through learningtreat.com, why we collect it, how long we keep it and the choices you have.
We are responsible for your personal information under UK data protection law, including the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. If you have a question about this policy, please use the contact form on our home page.
The short version
We collect what we need to run your account, deliver your courses, send your weekly progress report and handle your orders. We do not sell your information, and we do not use advertising or analytics cookies.
What we collect
Your account and orders. Your name, email address and country, and, if you choose to give it, your phone number. For orders with books or other items we post, we also collect your billing and delivery address. Your account is created from these details when you place your first order, and we keep a record of what you bought and when.
Course progress. The courses you are enrolled in, the practice you have completed, quiz answers and scores, and the certificates you earn. We use this to show progress in the dashboard and to write your weekly progress report.
Messages you send us. Your name, email address and the details you give us when you use our contact form. When you use Get help in your dashboard, we also attach your account details (name, email address, account number and phone number, if you gave one) and the type of device and browser you were using, so we can help you faster.
Newsletter. Your email address if you sign up, and a record of when you confirmed your subscription.
Technical information. Your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, which our hosting and security services log to keep the site working and safe. At checkout we may use your IP address to pre-fill your country, using a location database kept on our own server; your IP address is not sent to anyone for this.
We do not collect or store your card details or PayPal login. Payments are handled by Stripe and PayPal (see below).
Phone number (optional)
If you give us your phone number at checkout, we only use it to contact you about your order or your child's course access, for example if there is a problem with a payment or with logging in. We never use it for marketing. It is stored with your order details and passed to our payment provider with your billing details only to process your payment.
Children
Our courses are used by children, but accounts are set up and paid for by a parent or guardian: the account is created when you buy a course, using your email address. The account holds your child's course progress, and the weekly progress report is sent to the account's email address, which should be yours.
We only collect what is needed for the course: a name to show in the dashboard and the course progress described above.
Why we use your information
To provide what you have asked for (our contract with you): creating your account, taking payment, giving access to courses, sending the weekly progress report and order emails, and answering your messages.
Because the law requires it (legal obligation): keeping order and payment records for tax and accounting.
For our legitimate interests: keeping the site secure, preventing spam and fraud, and improving our courses. We always weigh these against your rights.
With your consent: sending our newsletter. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every newsletter.
Payments
Card payments are processed by Stripe, and PayPal payments by PayPal. When you pay, your card or PayPal details go straight to them and we never see them. They receive your name, email address, country, billing address (when we collect one) and the order amount, and use them to process the payment and prevent fraud, as described in their own privacy policies. If you pay with PayPal, PayPal also shares with us the name and email address on your PayPal account.
Emails
We send order confirmations, account emails (such as the link to set your password), course and weekly progress report emails, replies to your messages and, if you have signed up, our newsletter. Our emails are sent through Amazon Simple Email Service. Weekly progress reports and course completion emails are prepared by our own reporting system, which runs on Amazon Web Services and uses your course progress, name and email address.
Who we share it with
We only share your information with the services we use to run Learning Treat, and only what each one needs:
Hostinger (website hosting and server security), Stripe and PayPal (payments), Amazon Web Services (sending email and running our weekly progress report system), Google (reCAPTCHA spam protection on our forms, the fonts the site uses, and storage for our site backups), and Wordfence (website security, which processes visitor IP addresses).
If you order books or other items we post, the postal service or courier that delivers your order receives your name and delivery address.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights or the safety of others. We never sell your information.
Cookies
We use cookies that the site needs to work: to keep you logged in, to remember what is in your basket, to keep checkout secure and to protect our forms from spam. When you place an order, the shop also records which page you came from so we can see how customers find us.
We do not use advertising cookies or third-party analytics. Google's reCAPTCHA, which protects our login, contact and support forms and the PayPal checkout, may set its own cookies, and so may PayPal when you use its button at checkout; their privacy policies explain how they use them.
How long we keep it
Your account and course progress: for as long as you have an account. Ask us and we will delete it, apart from what we must keep by law.
Orders and payment records: six years, as UK tax law requires.
Messages from our contact and Get help forms: up to 12 months.
Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
Site backups: kept for a limited period, then replaced by newer ones.
Where your information is stored
Our website is hosted by Hostinger. Some of the services above, such as Stripe, Amazon Web Services and Google, may process information outside the UK. Where they do, they use safeguards recognised by UK law, such as adequacy regulations or the UK International Data Transfer Agreement.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your information, ask us to correct it or delete it, ask us to limit or stop using it, object to how we use it, or ask for it in a format you can take elsewhere. You can withdraw consent, such as for the newsletter, at any time.
To use any of these rights, please use the contact form on our home page or, if you have an account, Get help in your dashboard. We will reply within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). If you live outside the UK, you may have similar rights under your local law, for example India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our services or the law change. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
