Getting back on track after a missed week

A busy week happens to every family. A school trip, a cold, a birthday weekend, and suddenly the practice plan has slipped. The good news is that one missed week is easy to recover from, as long as you do not try to fix it all in one evening.

First, keep it low-key

Children pick up on worry quickly. If catching up feels like a punishment, they will put it off. Treat it as normal: "We missed a few days, so this week we'll do a little extra." That is all it needs to be.

One missed week is easy to recover from. Trying to fix it in one evening is what makes it hard.

Rather than doubling up on one day, add one short extra session on two or three days. Ten extra minutes after the usual practice is plenty.

  • Start with the newest work, while it is fresh in the plan.
  • Leave the missed test until the catch-up practice is done.
  • Keep one day completely free, so the week still has a rest.

Your weekly progress report lists anything still pending. Use it as a checklist rather than a scorecard. When the list is empty again, say well done and move on.

Try it with your child

Let your child choose which two days get the extra ten minutes. Having a say in the plan makes it far more likely to happen.

If weeks are slipping often, the plan may simply be too full for your family right now. That is fine. Your course access lasts 12 months, so a steadier pace is better than a rushed one.
